Cholesterol Craze

Cholesterol is a waxy-like substance necessary in the body for normal functioning such as the production of hormones and cell membranes.  Cholesterol is naturally produced within our system, but is also ingested when we eat animal and animal-derived foods such as milk and cheese.

Some individuals have naturally higher levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol based on hereditary factors.  This type of cholesterol, combined with high levels of triglycerides-or fat-within the blood, can lead to increased risk for heart attack and stroke.   HDL cholesterol – or high-density lipoprotein- actually reduces risk of heart disease, as it removes other cholesterol from the blood stream.  Many individuals have low levels of HDL cholesterol, which further puts them at risk for plaque build-up in the arteries.

A great way to prevent heart disease is a healthy diet.  Foods like oatmeal contain soluble fiber and have been shown to carry excess cholesterol out of the body.  Foods high in omega-3 fatty acid like salmon and walnuts have been shown to reduce triglyceride levels, thus preventing plaque buildup.
