When a driver pulled up to an apartment complex near Cutler Bay on a recent Friday morning, a microwaveable dinner of chicken parmigiana and mixed vegetables helped put Miami-Dade County closer to a milestone: 20 million free meals delivered to senior residents under the county’s first emergency COVID-19 program. County statistics show the program is on track to deliver its 20 millionth meal sometime in February, after crossing the 18,000,000 mark on Jan. 1. About 47,000 people receive the meals, an extension of an emergency program launched in March to encourage the county’s most vulnerable residents to stay home during the COVID pandemic. The cost: $165 million and counting, covered by a mix of federal dollars allocated for the coronavirus crisis. Now Miami-Dade is weighing how to continue the emergency program as the federal funds behind it become less certain but the COVID-19 threat remains. Miami-Dade relies on the Federal Emergency Management Agency to fund most of the costs, with dwindling CARES Act dollars covering the rest. County commissioners will have a chance to extend the program when they meet Wednesday, their first full session of 2021. COVID BOOSTED FUNDING FOR SENIOR MEALS Advocates for senior meals say the coronavirus crisis magnified…

MIAMI (WSVN) – Miami Heat legend Alonzo Mourning has continued distributing food to South Floridians since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, but he says the impact the virus is having on the community has deeply concerned him. Mourning teamed up with DeliverLean and Farm Share to help those struggling during the pandemic on Wednesday. 7News cameras captured box after box and bag after bag of food being distributed to recipients in line. “We’re able to provide over 900 boxes of fruits and vegetables to children and families in this community,” Mourning said. “I’m a strong believer that we’re all here because of other people’s contributions. I’ve been blessed and very thankful for all the things that people have done for me, not just as an athlete, but as a person. I wouldn’t be here without those individuals. Now, I’m in a position to not just sit back and wait for somebody else to do it. I gotta get out there and do it myself.” The former NBA center added that since the lockdown was lifted, he has seen troubling behavior throughout the community. “The long and short of it: our country is suffering, and we all have to do…

I had the pleasure of interviewing Scott Harris. Scott Harris is the founder and CEO of DeliverLean, a healthy gourmet meal delivery service and large-scale food manufacturer. Since inception, Harris scaled his boutique meal delivery service into a food manufacturing behemoth with 300-plus employees, producing over 5 million meals annually in Hollywood, Florida out of a 60,000 square foot USDA/FDA-certified commercial kitchen. DeliverLean’s portfolio spans 5 nutrition-based brands; including partnerships with Whole Foods, Aramark, Amtrak, Humana, Barnes & Noble, Brightline, Cleveland Clinic, Baptist Health South Florida; and contracts with Super Bowl LIV, Miami Boat Show and Art Basel. Since DeliverLean’s inception in 2011, Harris was focused on wellness and bridging the gap between eating well and meaningful health outcomes. Initially, he emphasized employee productivity and consumer health through better nutrition, but the goal was always to collaborate with insurance companies to elevate the company into a fully funded healthcare initiative. In 2020, Harris introduced DeliverLean CARE, the first of its kind plan to provide medically-tailored meals to the healthcare community in partnership with Humana and CarePlus Health Plans. The culmination of nearly a decade of hard work, DeliverLean has a 360 approach to wellness by reaching consumers, wholesale partners and…

Since March, almost every industry has been negatively impacted by the outbreak of COVID-19, causing our city to shut down—save for a few essential businesses—and stay at home, with the goal of slowing the curve of the spread of the virus. Due to the shutdown, frontline workers were overloaded, and many left without proper protective equipment (PPE), while the hospitality industry took a huge hit, causing thousands of Miami residents to be left without jobs. However, through this tough time, the community joined together and gave back to keep the city alive, aiding those who needed it most during this time. And this movement was largely impacted by a few select game changers, who went above and beyond to ensure that our city’s frontline workers and businesses had support. Below, we chat with some of the most influential individuals who gave back this Spring. HL: Tell us how DeliverLean has pivoted to serve the community during this tough time in Miami? SH: When the pandemic started, we knew we had to step up for our South Florida community. We formed a strategic partnership with Alonzo Mourning and the Overtown Youth Center to provide meals to underserved inner city families in downtown Miami. Every day and especially now in the ongoing pandemic, thousands of people in South Florida struggle to provide food for themselves and their families. On May 29, many showed up in deep gratitude, to pick up food at Gibson Park in front of Overtown Youth Center where NBA Hall of Famer Alonzo Mourning and representatives from BluGlacier, DeliverLean and OYC helped pass out the 425 meals. So far, DeliverLean and BluGlacier have put together and donated 2,000 meals using fresh Chilean salmon for those in need. “At BluGlacier we are deeply committed to feeding our community, especially those that need it most,” Evelyn Torres, CMO of BluGlacier, said. “We partnered with Deliver Lean Cares because of their dedication to our neighbors that need it most. Inter Miami CF still isn’t sure when it will be able to return to its inaugural season in Major League Soccer, but while players are off the field they are focusing on a different priority. South Florida’s new soccer team set the sport aside Wednesday morning to continue filling cars with canned good and pantry staples, something the club has been doing since the coronavirus pandemic temporarily shut down their season in mid-March. “It’s extremely important because this is a very unique time, this is something that affects everybody from all economic backgrounds,” said Chris Allan, the team’s Vice President of Community Engagement.
